United Nations Association-Chicago Chapter/U.S Department of State Engage a U.S. Embassy Professional Fellowship Program

Fellowship Program Summary

The United Nations Association-Chicago Chapter/U.S. Department of State (UNA/DOS) Engage a U.S. Embassy Professional Fellowship Program is a joint collaboration between the United Nations Association-Greater Chicago Chapter and the U.S. Department of State that provides an opportunity for UNA members to learn first-hand about the formulation and implementation of foreign policy and key mission strategic goals that diplomatic missions carry out to advance U.S. interests abroad.

The UNA/DOS Engage a U.S. Embassy Professional Fellowship Program provides an innovative platform to expose fellows to diplomacy through monthly digital engagement with U.S. diplomats posted at a U.S. Embassy they are matched with. A structured curriculum will be developed between UNA-Chicago and Diplomat in Residence for the Midwest Melissa Martinez.

UNA-Chicago members selected to participate in the Fellowship Program.

UNA Fellows will be paired with a U.S. Embassy or Consulate to carry out a six-month exchange via Digital Video Conferences (DVCs). An Embassy (or Consulate) and its sister “UNA Mission” will connect at least once a month through a structured curriculum. Overseas participants in this exchange may include U.S. diplomats including Foreign Service generalists and specialists, representatives from other U.S. government (USG) agencies at post, and Locally Employed Staff members (LES).

State Department representatives participating in the program will be able to share perspective on mission strategic goals they carry out on behalf of the USG, highlight skills they use to be successful in leading their teams, discuss interagency cooperation, and share insight into their pathways into public service.

Fellows will get the opportunity to stay connected to foreign policy and learn about bilateral and multilateral foreign policy priorities. Through these monthly exchanges, Fellows will get a first-hand glimpse into the inner workings of an Embassy or Consulate, learn about the inter-agency process, conflict negotiation, and get unique perspective into the art of diplomacy. They will be able to extend their networks, build their international portfolio, and become seen as subject matter experts on a variety of global issues or practices. Fellows will be required to write at least one blog post/in-depth article per month, and to develop a final report upon completion of the program.

For the first cohort, 20 fellows will be selected. Beginning on October 24, 2018 until November 24, 2018, applications for the fellows will be open. Criteria includes (1) active UNA member; (2) completion of an application include essay questions; (3) willing to dedicate at least 12 hours per month towards the program. Fellows will be notified in December 2018 for the program to start in January 2019.

UNA-Chicago will participate in a pilot program and is interested in being matched with the U.S. Embassy Nairobi, Kenya for a six-month exchange to be launched on UN Day on October 24, 2018. The curriculum and monthly sessions will begin in January 2019-June 2019.
