United Nations Day 2017

UNA Chicago

United Nations Day 2017

Yesterday we celebrated United Nations Day- the anniversary of the ratification of the UN Charter when the UN officially came into being. With our current political climate, this day is particularly important to us. We want to show Congress and the administration that the UN matters and we do not want to walk away from the international table and dialogue.

This year we have the exciting opportunity to announce our new partnership with Center on Halsted. This year’s theme for United Nations Day is “Global Goals, Local Leaders” and Center on Halsted is an exemplary local leader on the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

Kim Fountain, Chief Operating Officer of the Center on Halsted, was one of our two honored speakers at our UN Day Reception and Fundraiser. Kim has spent nearly 20 years working in the LGBTQ movement providing direct services to survivors of violence and successfully advocating for LGBTQ full inclusion. She has been published in academic journals and community based reports and has helped to represent LGBTQ concerns on numerous government and community based task forces and committees.

We also had the privilege to welcome Ryan Kaminski, Senior Programs Manager: Human Rights at UNFoundation/UNA-USA, as one of our honored speakers. Ryan comes to us with a strong background and interrelated interest in human rights, U.S. foreign policy, and international institutions. He previously worked with the Council on Foreign Relations’ International Institutions and Global Governance program and has been the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships.

We celebrated United Nations Day with globally-minded Chicagoans over food, drinks, and raffle prizes. A special congratulations to our raffle winners: Lynn, Maria, John, and Christen! The reception and fundraiser was a great success thanks to our supportive membership base, networks, and especially to our honorees and guest speakers. We are lucky to partner with great leaders and motivators like Kim Fountain and Ryan Kaminsky who each gave compelling speeches on human rights, their work on the Global Goals, and on inspiring change.

UNA Chicago supports strong and constructive US engagement in the UN through local community outreach, educational, and advocacy efforts. We aim to facilitate collaboration and conversation city-wide, amongst a backdrop of diverse voices and perspectives to cultivate global-minded citizens. And we do this with a continued infusion of fresh ideas, perspectives, and experiences for our membership and board.

The bigger we are, the louder our voice. Learn more about becoming a member today!
